What Are Dermal Fillers Procedures Like?

As we age, our bodies produce less collagen, which results in some volume loss on the face.

Filler injections are typically used to restore volume in places like sunken cheeks, under eye hollows, and thinning lips, although there are also some dermal filler procedures that can do the same for other body parts, such as the hands. They can also be used to fill in static wrinkles and lines like nasolabial folds or marionette lines.

Depending on the type of dermal filler used, filler injections also present a less invasive and more affordable alternative to plastic surgery. Some injectors actually use a specific type of dermal filler to augment a nose bridge, plump up thinning lips, or even enhance a jawline.

While dermal filler procedures have gotten increasingly popular and even commonplace, many first-timers still get nervous before their appointment, simply because they’re not sure what to expect.

So, today, let’s take a look at what usually happens during typical dermal filler procedures.

First Time Getting Filler Injections? Here’s What to Expect

dermal filler expectations

1.) Consultation.

At your first appointment, you’ll sit down with your injector and discuss your concerns and goals.

Do you want more volume in a specific part of your face? Plumper lips, perhaps? Or maybe you just want to bring back that youthful plumpness without looking overdone?

Your injector will then come up with the best possible approach for the results you want (i.e., where to inject, what filler to use, etc.) and discuss any potential risks. You may also take this time to get a specific cost estimate if you have a budget in mind.

2.) Treatment Proper.

Once you decide to move forward with the treatment, your injector will clean the treatment area. S/he may also apply a topical anesthetic, although some injectors skip this step since most fillers contain an anesthetic like lidocaine already.

The injector will then slowly and gently inject the filler with a needle or a blunt-tipped cannula. Between injections, they’ll gently massage the area to ensure the filler’s even distribution and to ensure a smooth, natural look.

The injection itself usually doesn’t take longer than 20 minutes and you could go back to your daily routine right after.

3.) Recovery and Results.

Most people see a boost in volume immediately after. Some swelling and bruising might occur, but these tend to subside in a day or two.

Generally, there’s no downtime required although you might be advised to refrain from applying pressure on the area to prevent the filler from migrating as it sets.

The results typically appear within a week after the procedure, but if it’s your first time getting lip fillers, your injector will take the conservative approach and wait till the swelling goes down so you can assess if you want to add more filler.

For best results, it’s always advisable to get filler injections only from qualified and experienced injectors. Our injectors at Wright’s Med Spa have an extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and closely consult with various patients in Nazareth or Stroudsburg, PA to determine which type of dermal filler can give them the beautiful, natural-looking results they want.
